Antibacterial Soap Ineffective

Researchers from the University of Michigan are saying that antibacterial soaps that contain triclosan are not as effective as being claimed by manufacturers.

According to the study, antibacterial soaps do not contain high enough levels of triclosan to actually kill bacteria. Rather, these soaps may even reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics such as amoxycillin.

The study is published in the August issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Latissimus dorsi

The latissimus dorsi is a triangular, flat muscle, which covers the lumbar region and the lower half of the trunk, and is gradually contracted into a narrow fasciculus at its insertion into the humerus.

Dunkin' Donuts Dumps Trans-fat

Dunkin' Donuts chain has announced today that it will do away with trans fat in its menu.

Trans fat - mostly from partially-hydrogenated vegetable oils - are blamed to cause coronary heart diseases and increase the level of 'bad' cholesterol in the body.

Dunkin' Donuts say that with its reformulation, 50 menu items will be "zero trans fat" by October 15.

Australian researchers have discovered that a fatty diet has the ability to damage eggs in the ovary and prevent them from becoming healthy embryos - giving light to the observation that obese women are often infertile.

According to the researchers from the University of Adelaide, the fat-induced infertility is caused by a protein known as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, and control of this protein can be achieved by losing and controlling weight.

VItamin D vs. Cancer

Vitamin is the newest vitamin to be enlisted in the battle against cancer. According to the researchers of the Moores Cancer Center, adequate Vitamin D intake may prevent breast and colorectal cancer. Vitamin D - also known as the sunshine vitamin - can be taken from milk, fish and fish liver oils. Exposure to sunlight will also simulate the skin to produce Vitamin D, hence the term sunshine vitamin.

Viruses and Obesity

A new research has found that viruses may cause obesity too. Scientists from the Louisisana State Universith found that adenovirus-36,which causes respiratory and eye infections, may also cause stem cells to develop into fat cells. The scientists found out that 30% of obese individuals carry the virus.

Milk and Muscles

Research conducted by scientists from McMaster University has found that driking milk after weightlifting boosts muscle mass gain and fat loss, compared to drinking soy or carbo-based drinks.

The study, conducted on 56 men with ages ranging from 18-30, found out that the group that drank milk gained 40% more muscle mass than the soy drinkers and 63% more than those who took carbo drinks.
